PIRATE AF: In November of 1813 Governor William Claiborne issued a $500 Reward for the capture of the notorious pirate Jean Lafitte. Letters ablaze, these wanted posters appeared throughout the city of New Orleans.
But of course the "Pirate King" could not pass on the opportunity to humiliate his famed nemesis! New Orleans citizens were treated to a bit of humor, compliments of their favorite corsair. In the brisk dawn of a November morning, not long after the wanted posters were distributed, passersby noticed all of them gone and replaced by another. This one read: $1,500 REWARD FOR THE CAPTURE OF GOVERNOR CLAIBORNE TO BE DELIVERED TO THE KINGDOM OF BARATARIA (Lafitte's Pirate Kingdom), solidifying the reputation of Jean Lafitte as one of history's most legendary pirates.
