Why are card backs blank? Cards from the earlier centuries were blank. But when they were used for poker it was discovered the blank backs could be marked with a smudge or other discreet marking for cheating. The joker wasn’t introduced until about 1875 in the United States.
Why are cards numberless? Numbers were first printed on cards around the end of the 18th century.
