PIRATE AF: On April 19, 1813, U.S. Marshal, Peter Duplessis received the official warrant from the court for the arrest of Jean Laffite. The warrant read as follows:
"You are hereby commanded ... that you take the body of Jean Lafitte so that he be and appear before the District Court of the United States for the Louisiana District — to be holden at the City of New Orleans on the third Monday of July next... to answer to the complaint of the United States and that he do file his defense or answer with the Clerk of said Court".
With warrants firmly in hand U.S. Marshal Duplessis attended to the business of trying to locate the Laffite brothers and bring them to trial. The Marshal searched the entire city, but consistently came up empty.
On November 4, 1813, frustrated and angry Louisiana Governor William C.C. Claiborne placed wanted posters all over the French Quarter. They read:
"$500 for the capture of known pirate Jean Lafitte!”
But the gentleman pirate could not pass on the opportunity to humiliate his rival. On November 7, 1813, Laffite replaced those posters with his own, which were emblazoned with the following:
"1500 dollar Reward for the capture of Governor Claiborne to be delivered to the Island of Grand Terre, Barataria!”
